How To Handle a Dental Emergency

Not sure if your little one’s dental issue is an emergency? We’re here to help. Check out these common situations that require a visit to Newport Kids Dental. When in doubt, just give us a call—we’ll talk you through it!

Soft Tissue Injuries (Lips, Tongue, or Cheeks)

Minor cuts that stop bleeding quickly usually don’t require a trip to the dentist. Just apply firm pressure with a clean cotton ball or gauze until the bleeding stops. However, if the area is still bleeding after 10 minutes, please give us a call—the cut might be deep enough to need a few stitches.

Facial Swelling

Swelling in the face can indicate a deep infection or an abscess caused by untreated decay and requires prompt attention. Please contact Newport Kids Dental right away if you notice any swelling. However, if the swelling is accompanied by trouble breathing or swallowing, seek immediate emergency medical care.

Toothache

If your child has a toothache that doesn’t improve after a day or two, it could be a sign of a cavity, a hidden crack from dental trauma, or even a deep infection. To keep them comfortable while you wait for an appointment, you can use over-the-counter pain relief (like Tylenol or ibuprofen) and apply a cold compress to the cheek. Then, call Newport Kids Dental to schedule a consultation with our dental team.

Avulsed (Knocked-Out) Permanent Tooth

A knocked-out permanent tooth requires immediate action for successful replantation, ideally within one to two hours. Control any bleeding with clean gauze and recover the tooth, handling it only by the crown to avoid damaging the root. If soiled, rinse the tooth briefly with cool water—do not use soap or scrub it—and place it in a container of cold milk. Contact Newport Kids Dental immediately to alert our team that you are en route for emergency treatment. Outside of office hours, please contact the Emergency Department for urgent care.

Fractured, Chipped, or Broken Teeth

A chipped, cracked, or broken tooth requires immediate clinical evaluation. If your child sustains a dental injury, contact Newport Kids Dental right away. To manage the site, apply firm pressure with clean gauze to control any bleeding. If possible, recover any tooth fragments and bring them to your appointment. You may manage pain and swelling with age-appropriate medication and a cold compress until you reach our office.
